OCTOBER MEETING
Candlestick Park 1984-1989, The Unknown Secrets Presented By: John Clinton, Interactive
Resources
The October program will cover events leading up to and immediately following
the Loma Prieta Earthquake when Interactive Resources was retained by
the Recreation and Parks division of the Public Works Department of
the City and County of San Francisco to investigate the condition of
the pre-cast concrete canopy panels prior to adding a roof membrane.
Speakers John Clinton and Paul Weir were both with Interactive Resources
at the time and worked on the project together. Deficiencies were found in the connections attaching the panels to the
roof girders and in other loaded connections, which could have precipitated
partial collapse had repairs not been completed prior to the 1989 earthquake.
In 1983, Interactive Resources was called upon by the City and County of
San Francisco to provide a comprehensive investigation of the deterioration
of structural and architectural components at Candlestick Park. The
project included a detailed report on observations, recommendations,
and test results, estimated construction costs for necessary repairs
for an extended service life. The study determined that the stadium
was in serious disrepair and recommended that the park be upgraded immediately
to provide a higher level of resistance to potential seismic forces.
Interactive Resources subsequently prepared contract documents for structural
repairs and provided construction administration services. The presentation will cover the interesting circumstances that are unique
to working on a large public facility and how Westcon members Paul Weir
and John Clinton worked together to resolve the issues at hand. John Clinton is a founding principal of Interactive Resources. Both a structural
engineer and an architect, he has more than 30 years experience providing
review, design and renovation services. John directs the firm’s
engineering review and structural and civil design services, including
the structural design of major projects such as the Point Richmond Tech
Center and Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Richmond Service
Center. He also leads structural design services for the firm’s
specialized projects. Paul Weir is now in Marin with his own company, Weir Andrewson Associates.
Weir Andrewson was established in 1995 and provides comprehensive engineering
and architectural services including structural engineering, architectural
design, construction review, investigation and analysis of building
failures. |
