Thin Bonded Overlays

Presented By: Brad Kamin, Senior Project Manager, Sika Corporation

Architectural and structural repair/renovation projects often require that a new polymer or cementitious layer be applied over an existing concrete slab. The development of a strong bond, limitation of cracking, and the performance of the thin edges of a tapered overlay are frequently critical to the success of the repair.

Elements in the success of overlay projects include development of the proper profile in the existing slab, removal of contaminants, achieving a saturated surface-dry substrate, selection of overlay materials, and curing.  When the overlay will be the substrate for the installation of a waterproofing membrane or resilient flooring, the surface texture, dryness, and absence of bond breakers are critical.

Brad Kamin, the speaker for our March dinnermeeting, brings considerable experience with such projects. For 10 years Mr. Kamin has served as a representative of the Sika Corporation in Northern California – currently a Senior Project Representative. He holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and is the current President of the Northern California Chapter of the ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute).

Throughout his tenure in the industry, he has participated in many projects with Westcon members.  Sika Corporation is a leading supplier of specialty chemical products and industrial materials serving construction and industrial markets. Sika's product lines include concrete admixtures, specialty mortars, epoxies, structural strengthening systems, industrial flooring, sealants, adhesives, specialty acoustic and reinforcing materials.

In his presentation Mr. Kamin will explore important factors in overlay specification and installation through the presentation of case-studies.  The case studies will include local projects throughout the Bay Area and highlight the steps necessary for a successful "long term" solution.
