21st Century Innovations in Protective Coatings

Through the centuries, paints and related materials have been used by artists to create masterpieces, builders to decorate homes and buildings, engineers and architects to protect bridges and industrial equipment and scientists in coating and protection of space vehicles.

A decade ago, Don Dancey was president of a large, family-operated commercial and industrial painting and waterproofing contracting firm.  Happening upon a trade journal article about a unique, high-build, flexible, tough protective system that amazingly cured in seconds…polyurea…he immediately envisioned this as the future in both painting and waterproofing.  Taking a leap of faith (and a hefty investment in equipment) he left the company business and worked to create a market where one didn’t know it existed…yet.

After several years of combining conventional painting to keep things flowing and building the polyurea business through a network of polyurea suppliers, the Polyurea Development Association, equipment manufacturers, engineers, architects and other contractors Don smoothly transitioned his new company – Innovative Painting & Waterproofing Inc, - into a multi-state corporation with over a dozen different polyurea application equipment systems, crews with a minimum of 40 hours polyurea-specific training per person, project management, estimating, marketing and support staff, and an engineering division manufacturing, distributing and implementing robotics polyurea preparation/application systems for the lining of in-place water and waste pipelines, culverts and tunnels.

Polyurea is a unique protective technology that encompasses coatings, sealants, waterproofing and other systems.  Don, who is President-Elect of the international Polyurea Development Association, will detail the varied uses for polyurea-based systems through review of many of Innovative’s wide-range of applications; from water tanks to theme park water rides; from below-grade waterproofing to parking deck coating; from padded jail cells to BART-car floors.  Be prepared to be both entertained and informed, with a technical/project presentation and live demonstration!
