The use of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels has increased dramatically as have problems with the roof coverings over which they are installed. This presentation discusses some practical ways building owners and design professionals can reap the benefits of conserving energy and avoid unwelcome surprises associated with non-fire rated systems, roof leaks, premature roof deterioration, inadvertent voiding of roof covering warranties, compromised access for fire suppression efforts, and excessive costs associated with temporarily removing and reinstalling PV panels to effect needed roof maintenance and repairs.

Learning Objectives – Understand practical considerations for success:

I.       Protect existing roof (e.g., avoid damage, preserve warranties).

II.      Coordinate design of roof covering and PV system (e.g., fire ratings, wind uplift, “cooling load” penalties).

III.    Anticipate/compensate for interaction of components (e.g., billowing of S/ Ply roof membranes, excessive heat transfer to roof below.)

IV.    Maintain “safe” roof access (e.g., maintenance, panel cleaning, and fire suppression).

WESTCON member, Philip D. Dregger is a professional engineer, fellow of the Roof Consultants Institute (RCI), and Principal of Technical Roof Services in Concord, California. Mr. Dregger has over 25 years experience investigating problems on the full range of roof and waterproofing systems and has been asked by clients such as the University of California, Kaiser Hospitals, and AT&T to design systems meeting unusual

and challenging requirements. Phil also consults to the San Francisco Public Utility Commission regarding ways to effectively implement their 2001 Solar Power Initiative program. Mr. Dregger has authored several articles on roof technology and has provided expert testimony on many occasions.
