January MEETING

“Spanning the Carquinez Strait”

Building the

Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge

Presented By: Bart Ney, Public Information Manager, Caltrans

and Project Manager, Moore, Iacofano, Goltsman Inc.

The new Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge over the Carquinez Strait is the first suspension bridge built in the United States in over thirty years. At the January Westcon dinner presentation, Caltrans Public Information Officer Bart Ney will show video footage of the construction of the bridge.

From the foundations to the final painting, all of the major elements of suspension bridge construction will be shown including an innovative new method for placing the roadbed of the bridge that had never been done anywhere else in the world.

The questions of “Why was a suspension bridge chosen, how much did the project cost, how did Caltrans work with the local communities effected by the construction” and many more will be answered during the presentation.

Mr. Ney will also address the status of where Caltrans is now with the other bridge projects relating to this new suspension bridge. A brief question and answer period will take place immediately following the video presentation.

Bart Ney is a Project Manager with the Berkeley based Planning and Communication firm, Moore, Iacofano, Goltsman Inc. and is currently the Public Information Manager for Caltrans on all of the Carquinez Bridge Projects. Mr. Ney holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California in Urban and Regional Planning and Real Estate Development with a minor in Architecture.

He has worked on the new Carquinez Bridge Projects for the last 5 years beginning with the environmental impact report and continuing through construction and project delivery.

Mr. Ney co-authored “Spanning the Carquinez Strait”, a book on the construction of the bridge and wrote, hosted and co-produced Caltrans’ upcoming documentary film on this project.
