A Bay Area resident, Hal Hoppe Graduated from the US Merchant Marine
Academy in Kings Point New York with a BS degree in engineering. He
was assigned to Naval duty leaving the Navy as Engineering Officer in
the summer of 1947. After release from the Navy, Mr. Hoppe enrolled in the University of
California at Berkeley graduating in 1950 with a degree in business.
In 1951, Mr. Hoppe was hired by Owens Corning Fiberglass but was recalled
to active duty in the Navy until fall of 1953 when he was transferred
to active reserve status and able to continue his employment with Owens
Corning. Although retired as Captain in the Naval Reserve, Mr. Hoppe
remains active in Naval affairs as evident by being invited by the Secretary
of the Navy to attend and participate in the Current Strategy Forum
in June 2002 at the Naval War College Newport, Rhode Island. Mr. Hoppe Remained with Owen Corning for sixteen years after being Contract
Manager of Industrial Insulation in the Sacramento office. In 1969 he
started his own industrial insulation company which he sold in 1983
to start HB&T Environmental Inc. providing professional services
which include surveying proposed projects including the visual identification
of hazardous building materials, taking of bulk and air samples an the
interpretation of laboratory reports. The company also prepares plans
and specifications for abatement projects and prepares the abatement
cost estimates and bidding documents. Mr. Hoppe's presentation will be a general overview of "environmental
hazards" getting into the specifics of mold, lead, and asbestos.
From the overview the presentation will discuss the responsibilities
for correction and technologies available concluding with a brief introduction
into detecting contaminants in containerized shipping as a potential
act of terrorism. This month's meeting will be held at the Courtyard By Marriott in
Emeryville The building
is visible from Interstate 80 and is near the large IKEA building. |
